The Greenbrier

White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

When a resort lists “Directions by Train” on its website, it’s a safe bet the place has a long, rich history. The Greenbrier fits that description perfectly. Though the historic resort’s first guests in 1778 couldn’t travel by train and today’s guests are unlikely to, arriving by rail seems the way to approach this National Historic Landmark, known as America’s Resort.

Though The Greenbrier’s classic architecture and penchant for impeccable service are a throwback to the golden age of travel, its amenities, facilities and accommodations thoroughly satisfy today’s vacationers.

In fact this is a great getaway for families. The resort tailors a host of programs for kids, and at 3 p.m. daily the whole family can play nine holes for $195. The package includes rental clubs, driving range privileges, and golf cart for two adults and their children (ages 21 and under).

All great resorts offer a wide menu of recreational activities, but at The Greenbrier there are over 50 from which to choose. The three golf courses are all worthy of the trip alone. You’ll find a superb spa here (it’s one of the resort’s most popular amenities), along with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis, croquet, horseback riding and more.

But they also offer an Off-Road Driving School, Falconry Academy and tours of the secret bunker underneath the resort that stood ready for 30 years to house the government in case of nuclear attack.

Summer is a great time to visit. The Greenbrier’s 6,500 acres in the Allegheny Mountains keep the breezes flowing and the humidity at bay.
