Golfing visitors to San Antonio can begin their golf adventure at the Westin LaCantera Resort Course, the final architecture pairing of Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf and current home of the PGA Tour’s Texas Open. While the par-72 layout may host the best golfers in the world for one week, it’s open to all the rest of the year. So is the Arnold Palmer-designed par-71 Palmer Course, located directly across the street.
A day at the Hyatt Hill Country Golf Club is certainly a winning one with three Arthur Hills-designed nine-hole layouts amidst the natural stone creeks and spectacular springtime wildflowers of San Antonio.
Located between the airport and downtown, the par-71 Quarry Golf Course is a must-play. Architect Keith Foster neatly fit the back nine along the natural stone quarry walls of the former Alamo Cement Plant, giving golfers a visual challenge unlike anywhere in Texas.
A few miles north, Canyon Springs Golf Club is built on some of the highest points in San Antonio. The site of a former 1800s trail stop, the course offers some stunning views from tees and greens. Just south of downtown is the historic Pecan Valley Golf Course, site of the 1968 PGA Championship won by Julius Boros. It’s the only major tournament ever held in the San Antonio area.
Of course, no San Antonio golf trip would be complete without a round at city-owned Brackenridge Golf Course, a few miles north of downtown. Designed in 1915 by A.W. Tillinghast, it’s easily the most historic course in the state.
And while the Tournament Players Club (TPC) San Antonio isn’t on the schedule yet, it will be soon with two championship public courses along with a JW Marriott resort scheduled to open by 2010.
